Eating in DayZ is not just a number going up. What you eat and what state it is in decides whether the calories help you or make you sick.
Always cook meat
Raw meat carries a real illness risk. A campfire, a cooking pot or a tripod turns a liability into the best calorie source in the game.
Spoilage is visible
Food degrades through condition states. Eating something badly spoiled will make you sick, and being sick while cold is how a survivable situation becomes a fatal one.
Cold food since 1.26
Items have temperature. On Sakhal food freezes solid and gives you nothing until it is thawed by a fire or by body heat.
Cooked food warms you
A hot meal contributes to heat comfort. On the cold maps that is a second reason to cook rather than eat from the tin.
