Overview
Once you can feed yourself away from towns, the map opens up. Fishing and trapping were reworked in the 1.26 line and are now a genuine alternative to scavenging.
Fishing
A rod and bait, or an improvised line, turns any shoreline into a food source. Sakhal has its own fish species, which matters if you are cooking for heat comfort as well as calories.
Hunting
A knife makes every animal into meat, fat and leather. Cook it. Carrying raw meat you intend to cook later is how food poisoning happens.
Traps
Traps work while you do other things, which is their whole value. Set them where you are going to be anyway, not where you have to detour back to.
