Radiation and clothing

Protection is additive, and most monuments need far less than a hazmat suit.

Overview

"Bring a hazmat" is the laziest advice in Rust. Radiation protection stacks across every piece you wear, and most of the green monuments are clearable in clothing you crafted in your first ten minutes.

How it works

Every clothing item carries a radiation protection value and they add together. You need enough total protection to cancel the monument’s radiation level — above the threshold you take no rad damage at all, below it you tick down steadily.

Rough thresholds by monument

These are the figures the guides and the community converge on. Treat them as targets, not guarantees, and watch your Geiger counter — it does not lie.

  • Sewer Branch and Satellite Dish: around 11 protection. A cloth or burlap set covers it.
  • Water Treatment, Airfield, Trainyard: around 25 protection.
  • Launch Site, Missile Silo, Military Tunnels: hazmat, plus tea or radiation pills for the interior.
  • Harbor and both Oil Rigs: no radiation at all.

Consumables

Anti-radiation tea and pills buy you time inside the worst rooms, but they do not replace protection. At Launch Site and the Silo you tick through a hazmat regardless — that is what the tea is for.
