Gunplay for new players
The recoil model has not been rewritten. What changed in 2026 is how the character moves.

Overview
There is a lot of bad advice about Rust gunplay, most of it either scripts from before 2022 or claims of a recoil rewrite that did not happen. The model in use today is the same family that arrived in 2022: a learnable tendency with genuine randomness on top.
What that means practically
You cannot memorise a pattern that removes the spread, but you can learn the tendency of each weapon and compensate for most of it. The randomness is what stops a perfect pull from being a laser.
Burst, do not dump
Short controlled bursts land more rounds than a full magazine at anything beyond very close range. The AK is the hardest gun in the game to control and the worst one to learn on.
Attachments are not optional
A muzzle device and a sight change the practical accuracy of a weapon more than most players’ aim does. Build them before you build a second gun.
June 2026 changed the feel, not the maths
A new player model and animation set landed in June 2026. Fights read differently — peeks and strafes look different than they used to — but the recoil model behind them did not change. Re-learn the reads, not the pattern.
Practise after patches, not before
Gun balance gets a pass most months. Spend your aim-server time in the week after a force wipe, not the week before.
