Crossbreeding plants, step by step

How a planter passes genes to the plant in the middle, exactly as the game works it out, and how to use it.

Overview

Crossbreeding is a vote. When the plant in the middle reaches its Crossbreed stage, the plants around it vote slot by slot with their genes, and the strongest vote can overwrite what the middle plant had. Everything here is read from the game’s own code, not community lore.

Gather and read your seeds

Hover a clone or plant to see its six genes. Seeds do not carry genes: every seed you plant rolls a fresh set. Only clones copy the parent’s genes exactly, so the plan is always to breed one good plant and clone it.

Plant the neighbours first

Put the donor plants around the space for the middle one. Only plants of the same crop, in the same planter and within 1.5 m of the middle plant take part. A melon next to hemp does nothing.

Plant the middle plant

The middle plant is the one that changes. It crossbreeds once, when it enters its Crossbreed stage, about 21 minutes after planting in good conditions. Neighbours only need to be alive at that moment.

How each slot is decided

For each of the six slots the neighbours’ genes are added up: W and X count 1.0 each, G, Y and H count 0.6 each. The gene with the highest total replaces the middle plant’s gene, but only if that total is higher than the weight of the gene already there. Two G neighbours (1.2) overwrite a W (1.0); one G (0.6) does not.

Watch out for ties

If two genes finish on the same total, the game keeps whichever reached that total first as it walks through the planter’s plants, which in practice means planting order. Good plans avoid ties altogether.

Clone the winner

Once the middle plant has the genes you want, take clones from it before it dies. Clones keep those genes for the next round or for a full planter of copies.
